Diversity

Counseling techniques include not only traditional therapy therapeutic approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) but some students benefit from specific therapies such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

Clinical interventions for students who are struggling to get to school on a regular basis are also addressed through monthly parent support groups, which are conducted in the evening and facilitated by Holmstead clinicians. These groups also address issues of concern regarding adolescent interaction with family, peers, school, and the community. The support group is also an opportunity for parents to connect with each other and talk about what has worked and what has not worked in helping their child.

Holmstead students participate in individual psychotherapy and group counseling. Therapy is provided by a staff that includes a male licensed clinical social worker and a female licensed doctoral level psychologist who allow students to work with the professional with whom he/she/they relate most comfortably and productively. In addition, support services are available in our “Zen Den” where students can meet with one or our social work interns from Ramapo College to not only receive therapeutic services but sometimes to just get a break. Group therapy consists of traditional therapy groups, social skills groups, a substance abuse group, and a mindfulness/relaxation training group.
